Essure is a device which helps in avoiding pregnancy for women manufactured by Conceptus Inc., a company acquired by Bayer. This device was approved for use in US in the year 2002. The insertion of this device does not need a cut or anaesthesia. The procedure takes only ten minutes and can be done in any doctor’s office. Flexible coils will be inserted through the vagina into the fallopian tubes. When placed, a tissue develops around the device in three months period and develops a block in the fallopian tubes. The development of this tissue creates a block that will keep the sperm from reaching the eggs and prevents pregnancy. Three months post placing the device in the body, a radiologist will perform a test to ensure the fallopian tubes are fully blocked and the user can rely on the device to control pregnancy.
Essure Lawsuit
The Essure lawsuit states that the manufacturer and marketer of the device had hidden the evidence from Food and Drug Administration of several risks relating to the birth control device for getting government approval, and also has failed to warn the users and doctors about the risks in using this device. The lawsuits state that if the company had warned about the side effects or risks, the users would have opted different birth control methods.
